The Suitcase Test

The Only Thing I Pack Twice for a Cruise

Ten days, one carry-on, five dinners. Every piece in my suitcase has to pass the same test. This is the one that passes it in two colors.

1The Test

A piece earns its place in my bag if it can do five things. Get through the airport. Sit at the pool bar. Go to dinner with earrings. Come out of the bag without an iron. Hold my phone so I am not carrying a bag on an excursion.

Most dresses fail on the last two. Most trousers fail on the first three. I stopped packing either.

2Day One, the Airport

Boarding pass in the left pocket, phone in the right, hands free for the coffee and the carry-on handle. The pockets sit in the side seams and go deep enough for a whole hand, so nothing falls out when I sit.

Nothing at my waist for a five-hour flight. No zip, no belt, no button: the jumpsuit pulls on over the head, and the only seam that shapes it is under the bust.

3Day Three, Pool Bar to Dinner

Standing still, the wide leg falls like a long dress. Walking, it is trousers. At noon it is flat sandals and sunglasses. At eight it is the same jumpsuit with gold earrings, and nobody at the table knows it is the same jumpsuit.

The split neckline shows the collarbone and nothing else, so it reads as dinner without a necklace.

4The Morning It Came Out of the Bag

It has the look of linen and it is cool like linen, but the weave does not hold a crease the way real linen does. Rolled in a carry-on for two days, it came out ready to wear. No iron in the cabin, no iron needed.

I packed real linen once. It was creased before we left the port.

5Why Two

Because the second one costs twenty dollars. One is $49.99, two are $69.99. White for the days, Burgundy or Black for the nights, and one is always clean.

Eight colors: White, Black, Khaki, Green, Burgundy, Pink, Light Blue and Blue. Sizes S to 2XL. 90-day returns.
